How to check a derailleur hanger for wear and prevent it from breaking

To avoid having to make repairs on the side of the road during your next ride, it's important to check the condition of your derailleur hanger before every ride, just as you check your tires and your brakes.
The hanger should be perfectly aligned with your frame. If you notice difficulty shifting gears while riding, it could mean that your derailleur needs adjustment or that the derailleur hanger is about to break.

How to replace a derailleur hanger

This is a mechanical task anyone can do. Get a set of Allen keys that fit the bolt. Unscrew it and remove the broken hanger. Apply a little Loctite threadlocker to the fastener.
Then position the new derailleur hanger on the frame. Check that it's aligned and insert the mounting bolt. Tighten it carefully, without overtightening, to avoid damaging the threads.
