Mountain Bike Cassettes - 5 / 5
How to Choose a Road or Mountain Bike Cassette
There are 5 important things to check when buying a new cassette:
• Choose the same speed standard as your current setup, while staying within your derailleur's capacity. For example, a 9-speed cassette won't be compatible with a 10-speed drivetrain.
• Choose the number of speeds you want, or the number of cogs, usually from 8 to 11. Cog size depends on the number of teeth. The gear range is determined by the number of teeth on the smallest cog compared with the largest (e.g., 11/23).
• Choose the right gear range for your riding style. For flat terrain, choose an 11/23 ratio; for mountain climbing, choose a 12/28 ratio.
• Consider the cassette's weight (steel, aluminum, titanium)
• Check cassette compatibility with your freehub body
When replacing your cassette, we recommend replacing your chain as well.
How to Maintain Your Bike Cassette
The cassette is a wear item that takes a beating during mountain biking or cyclocross, and to a lesser extent during road riding.
To avoid replacing it frequently, we recommend cleaning it once a month with a brush and mineral spirits or a spray-on degreaser. Let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse gently with warm water, taking care not to let water get into the freehub body. Dry with a clean cloth. If you have an air compressor, use an air nozzle to remove any moisture. Lubricate the entire assembly with the lubricant you normally use on your chain.
